The otoro caviar nigiri is the best single bite of food I've ever had. Truly incredible. Umi has some of the best quality fish 10/10! The only thing we ordered that we wouldn't get again is the baked lobster tempura. It wasn't bad just everything else was so much better. Next time we might have to get 2 orders of the spicy tuna crispy rice
Wow. The lobster tail and scallops is incredible, it needs to come with some bread or something because that sauce and it's a shame to wasted and should be illegal too. The service (John) was very knowledgeable and made the lobster and scallops suggestion and 10/10. I ordered all 10/10. Kamikaze Roll Typhoon Roll Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice Yellowtail Jalapeno The vibe is very boogie and low, low light, cocktail attire. They take reservations but they are hard to get. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
They say it's the Best Sushi in Atlanta, and I can taste why. But let's start at the beginning. It's a cold, rainy evening in Atlanta. I park at the parking lot near the St. Regis Hotel. The restaurant is right around the corner, and at 6pm, there is a buzz in a beautiful, warm space. Attitude at check-in, though. Party of one is never good in these places, and immediately there is a DO YOU HAVE A RESERVATION. With a NO, I get the look up and down by a snooty blonde surrounded by what I can only call an entourage. To be fair, though, I look around and the bar counter is almost complete. They insist on taking my bag, and I have barely enough time to grab my cell phone and glasses before I am whisked off to the sushi counter, which, with ten seats, is empty except for me (at 7 pm, it's filling up quickly). My waiter is immediately with me and he is superb. Food and drink menus and my little check-in ticket are at hand, which I had forgotten in my mad entrance. First off, I order a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Each day, as I wake up, I thank whoever might be up there for giving us those precious few acres of vineyards on the northern tip of the South Island, which give us the best SB in the world. This one is no exception. Cool yet complex, with a hint of minerality and just the right amount of citrus. Before I know it we are both poring over the beautiful menu. There is a tasting menu, which, in retrospect, I should have had, but I won't think about that now...I erred on the side of minimalism! First, I have the tuna carpaccio: very good but not tremendous: 6/10 Next is their avocado salad. Served "in situ," it is simple yet inspired by a pungent tangy sauce served on a center island. OMG!. This one's a stunner 9/10. My next choice was a mistake. You should never order a hot dish in a great sushi restaurant, yet the Chilean sea bass looked so good on the menu. And, yes, it was melt-in-my-mouth good, but the soy sauce flavor was a bit one-dimensional and overwhelming. 7/10 Finally, Nirvana--not the group but the state of mind. The spicy tuna roll. This was a taste experience that shall never be forgotten. Magic on a plate. Eden before the fall. By now it 7.30. The place is packed, and I realize I have the best seat in the house. They serve coffee. Unusual for a sushi restaurant. They pour it for you in a little Japanese ceremony, and I have two of these! This course - which I mix with some delicious vanilla ice cream - is not a throwaway. We are talking about three different South American coffee beans, which give it a rich, bold flavor. I top it all off with my favorite drink, an Old Fashioned on the Rocks (bourbon). It is a wonderful experience to be shared next time. Next time, the emphasis will be on rolls, possibly the tasting menu. Either way, you cannot go wrong at Umi--my best dining experience in Atlanta. I doubt it will be bettered since I return to LA in July.
Umi is Atlanta's punchline to the joke that is Nobu. If you've had high-end Japanese food, this menu will look familiar. Seviche / tiradito of various types? Yup. Sweet, spicy fried rock shrimp? Yup. Beautiful fish quality? You bet. Nice assortment of chef made rolls as well as nigiri / sashimi? Yes and yes. This menu is HIGHLY derivative, but that doesn't mean it isn't done correctly. Restaurant is beautiful, great list of Sake (unfiltered available like we like), the "don't touch my donut dessert" was fabulously filled, and the "box sushi" that is pressed with no seaweed binder was a really pleasant and light way to eat a roll. Service was friendly, and we especially enjoyed table-side pour-over coffee with our dessert. This place looks and is expensive, but not totally out of bounds given quality and quantity. We a $50 bottle of sake, 2 starters, 2 rolls, a hot dish, the box sushi, a dessert and coffee we looked at ~$140/person including tip which was more or less expected if not on the kinder side. What an expensive world we live in, my goodness. 5/5 we loved Umi and would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks for helping us celebrate our first date night after becoming parents!
Umi in Atlanta is it for top-tier sushi in Buckhead. The whole place has this dark, moody vibe with an orange backlit glow that makes everything feel sleek. Started off with the thinly sliced yellowtail jalapeño and the spicy tuna crispy rice, which were both very good. Then came the rock shrimp, which were little bites of crispy, creamy perfection. But the real standout... the scallop and the lobster. Absolutely unreal. They cut everything so beautifully that it's almost too pretty to eat... I said almost. If you're into high-quality sushi with flawless presentation, Umi is the move.
Great food! We ordered 2 orders of omakase and shared it among 4 as well as some other rolls and appetizers we were interested in. The chilean sea bass was stunning and the hotate(scallops) were definitely my favorite. I will say that the service is incredibly slow(even for omakases) and they are seriously understaffed. The ambience was also very noisy - we sat at the tables near the bar and it was very loud and we can barely hear each other without leaning forward. Food was enjoyable, but would not recommend coming at a busy time
Came here on a Monday night, sat at the bar. The food was so fresh and there wasn't anything I ordered I didn't like. The Chilean sea bass was my favorite, it was cooked perfectly. All the fish was super great and melt in your mouth. The drinks were the best part! I've never been to a sushi restaurant with good liberations and good food. Dickson was my server and he was amazing, had good recommendations and very tentative. Can't wait to come back! I'm from LA and now this is now one of my favorite sushi spots
OMG. This is hands-down my new favorite sushi spot--it's truly a 5-star experience. Why have y'all been gate keeping? The ambiance, the service, and the food are top tier. I've been raving about it to all my friends, and trust me, they need to try it. While the sushi is obviously the best I've had in the city, there are a few standouts I can't not mention: the spicy tuna crispy rice is phenomenal, the salmon yuzuviche is absolutely delicious, the yellowtail jalapeño is my personal favorite, the wagyu is seasoned to perfection and so flavorful, and the baked lobster is incredible. The portion sizes on the hot dishes are spot on. You think you're not getting much, but by the end of the meal, you're absolutely stuffed. Now, about dessert... I won't say too much, but get the donut. You will not regret it. Oh, and the bathrooms? Top tier. If you know, you know--I'll leave it at that. Can't wait to go back and celebrate another special occasion! I'm saving this restaurant for all my out of town friends lol .
Absolutely love this place! Food was amazing. Our favorite dish was lobster and scallops! The coffee after dinner was really good as well. The tables are small and close together but we went pretty early so were fine. Its beautiful inside. Lychee martini was perfection!
Delectable! Superb service, cozy ambience, and most importantly exceptional food. We were visiting family and they brought us here for an early dinner without the kiddos. What a treat. From the second you step foot inside you're transported into a Japanese oasis. Nothing too kitschy really chill nyc vibes, also not trying to be pretentious. Ok now to the food: Avocado salad (5/5) pure bites of happiness. Cool, smooth, creamy with a subtle kick of wasabi Yellowtail jalapeno (5/5) usually my go to and this didn't disappoint. Crisp clean and balanced Seared tuna (5/5) Perfection, crispy and that yummy soft middle Spicy tuna crispy rice (5/5) warm, crispy, soft and perfect tuna to rice ratio. Perfection Rock shrimp (5/5) yes please. Crispy goodness not too breaded or sauced and a perfect treat to pop in your mouth. Toro caviar (6/5) really just that good. Again perfect dish to rice ratio and topped off with some decadence to seal the deal Dessert we had this special donut with ice cream/custard in the middle that we shared perfectly warm crispy and not too sweet. The evening ended with some truffles and let's just say we left will happy bellies. Excellent service and the food just hit all the spots. Uni spaghetti (5/5) el dente tasty yumminess really not even worth a descriptor just go and eat it yourself. I would eat that daily if that didn't seem offensive. Uni (5/5) vibrant, smooth and just bites of joy My favorite was probably the tuna
